The wine delivers a seamless quality in which the blended varieties—Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc—are expertly played against each one another to form the building blocks of this very pretty wine. It finishes long and with lots of balanced intensity. That brilliant sharpness is what distinguishes this vintage.

Podere Sapaio proprietor Massimo Piccin says a new Bolgheri Superiore will soon join his portfolio with an upcoming initial release of under 5,000 bottles. The estate made a Bolgheri Superiore until 2013. It skipped over the 2014 vintage, and in 2015, the wine became an IGT Toscana because fruit from the neighboring village of Bibbona was added to the blend. Starting in 2023, Sapaio will be 100% Bibbona. The vines in Bibbona were planted in 2003 and Massimo Piccin strongly believes in the winemaking potential of this site, which has reddish iron-rich soils on the Tuscan Coast. “It was a shame not to use it to its full potential,” he says.

The vineyard is named “011” from the television series Stranger Things, which occupied Massimo Piccin’s attention during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Today, he sees his flagship wine Sapaio as an expression of the best of Bibbona, and the new Bolgheri Superiore will be the best of Bolgheri, with sandy and clay soils that add structure to the wine. The estate is also experimenting with the Mourvèdre grape, which is virtually unused in this area.

Reviewed by Monica Larner | Score 97 From a highly anticipated vintage, the Podere Sapaio 2021 Sapaio reveals extra volume and textural richness, but it remains incredibly focused […]

[1

post-6107","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-non-categorizzato
["GET
